I can happily report that since my last update below, September 30, 2019 we have not experienced any haze anymore. Most likely the main reason is that during the last few years it has been raining a lot preventing the spread of controlled and uncontrolled wild and forest fires.
In this section I will provide a day to day update on the Haze Conditions in Tuk Tuk.
For now it seems that we are almost back to normal. As long as our visibility is more than 40 km I will stop reporting on a daily basis.
September 30, 2019
Today our visibility is almost back to normal, some 100 km.
September 29, 2019
After a little bit of rain in the morning now in the afternoon our visibility is about 80 km.
September 28, 2019
Visibility a bit less than yesterday. Today some 12 km. Most likely still good enough for flight operations to and from Silangit. During the day the Haze substantially disappeared and now at 17.00 h our visibility is some 70 km.
September 27, 2019
The Haze is coming back. Today our visibility is some 15 km. Most likely still good enough for flight operations to and from Silangit.
September 26, 2019
We had a bit of rain yesterday night in Tuk Tuk and most likely much more in other Lake Toba areas. The result for now is that our visibility is about 60 km. Air traffic on Silangit Airport is back to normal.
Reportedly, it has also been raining in Riau. Let's hope that we see the effect of this in a few days.
September 25, 2019
It is again a bit better than yesterday. Today our visibility is about 10 km.
The good news for us that our todays guests from Kuala Lumpur coming in with Air Asia Flight AK 411 just landed in Silangit Airport and are now in the car on their way to us.
September 24, 2019
It is a bit better than yesterday. Today our visibility is about 8 km.
Some flights from and to Silangit Airport have been cancelled, others are listed as 'Scheduled', the meaning of which is not clear to us.
September 23, 2019
Conditions are the same as yesterday. Visibility about 5 km.
Reportedly all flights to and from Silangit Airport have been cancelled.
September 22, 2019
Since a few days Tuk Tuk has been affected with a light haze, visibility some 15 to 20 km, as compared to our normal visibility of over 120 km. Unfortunately today, September 22, it is much worse and our visibility is now about 5 km.
We just learned that for reason of the haze the Air Asia Flight from Kuala Lumpur to Silangit Airport could not land and returned back to Kuala Lumpur for reason of poor visibility.
Page Updated: February 27, 2016
Since the day before yesterday the Haze is completely gone. Bright sunshine, blue sky and fresh air and looking at the hills, more than 40 shades of green. May we hope that is the last report on the Haze for a very long time.
October 30, 2015
HAPPY DAYS ARE HERE AGAIN
At 05.00 h this morning, normally these days a bit sinister dark, we saw a moon and stars all over the place.
Following that it became a bit noisy. Birds started flying around making quite a lot of noise and the real early ones already trying to catch the worms.
Now just before sunrise, it is already light, our dogs decided to make the best of it and are merrily barking and chasing the cats of the neighbours.
Our Rooster is happily looking after the hens one by one and crying Victory after each success. We are looking forward to an increased kampung chicken egg production in the coming weeks.
Our rabbits are very actively doing what rabbits are supposed to do, so we expect quite a few still very small bunnies during the upcoming Christmas and New Year holidays.
In short THE HAZE IS ALMOST GONE. Visibility is about 2/3 back to normal, which means now a visibility of about 80 km.
As said HAPPY DAYS ARE HERE AGAIN
After a couple of really bad days, even the children were excused from going to school, it became better yesterday. Today is much better than yesterday. Our visibility is now a little bit more than 10 km.
The Haze is now the worst so far. Our visibility today is less than 1 km.
Unfortunately, the Haze is back. Visibility today some 5 to 10 km.
The day before yesterday we had 65 mm of rain. Yesterday evening and last night we got another 51 mm. The result this morning is a visibility of some 70 to 80 km, and quite a few shades of green in the hills. It is a bit cool, everything smells fresh. So for a breath of fresh air Tuk Tuk, Lake Toba, Samosir is the place to be.
October 8, 2015
During the last week it was a little bit on and off. Visibility something between 10 and 15 km. But still not too many shades of green.
Since yesterday the haze is back. It is even worse than before. Visibility today is about 1 km.
The haze is gone. We can clearly see the contours of Balige and way beyond that. Visibility about 120 km.
Today is much better than yesterday. Our visibility is about 25 km.
Unfortunately the Haze is back. This at 08.00 h we can barely see Tomok, which means our visibility is about 5 km. I will report again when it is getting better.
Since yesterday morning the Haze is completely gone. Our visibility is back to normal, which means more than 100 km, and hills display their more than 40 shades of green.
The rain yesterday afternoon and last night, in Tuk Tuk 18 mm, really helped. Visibility this morning at 07.00 h about 60 km.
September 3, 2015
Unfortunately, it is not getting better. Visibility today is about 5 km, which means we just can make out Tomok and the countours of the surrounding hills. I will report here again when it is getting better or even worse.
In the middle of the dry season it is the perfect time for starting to burn the forests, especially in Janbi and Riau. I am afraid that the smoke is coming our way, resulting in for us what will most likely be the start of the Haze season.
Visibility today: about 14 km instead of the more than 100 km we were used to
Again we had a few mm of rain in Tuk Tuk, but there must have been heavy rain in the Lake Toba Watershed as the waterlevel in Lake Toba is now some 3 cm higher than yesterday. The result is that the Haze is completely gone and our line of sight is back to over a 100 km.
As long as our line of sight is more than 50 km no further reports will be made and you may assume that everything is BACK TO NORMAL.
In Tuk Tuk we had a little bit of rain in the early morning. this was followed by a clear sky and bright sunshine and the haze is almost gone. Line of sight: More than 70 km.
It was a bit better in the morning and after it got quite windy it is clearing up pretty quickly. We now have bright sunshine and we see a blue sky. Though it is still a bit hazy, we see already quite some different shades of green on the Samosir Hills again. Line of sight: More than 50 km.
The 2 mm rain of yesterday afternoon and early evening did not really help. Line of sight some 20 km.
The haze seems to come back. Line of sight back to 15 km, which is still quite ok as far as health conditions are concerned, however, the views are less spectacular.
In the morning it was not too bad. In the afternoon it got windy and better.
Line of sight some 50 km.
In the morning it was even worse than yesterday. Since midday it is getting better and we see things and places at a distance of about 15 km.
It is a very quiet day, meaning hardly any wind. Most likely a bit of sunny day as we have a clear indication of where the sun is, but the sun is most of the time completely obscured by the haze or maybe clouds. From Horas Family Home we cannot see the Fish Farms, I just thought that I saw a silhouette of the car ferry crossing from Parapat to Tomok. If you know where to look for we can just see a bit of Tomok through the Haze.
Distance we can see today on October 12 is about 4 km.
HAZE in TUK TUK – SAMOSIR – LAKE TOBA OCTOBER 12, 2014
Since about a week now the HAZE Season in Tuk Tuk is on again. As this coincides with recent Mt Sinabung eruptions some people in Tuk Tuk like to put the blame on Mt Sinabung, which is patently not true.
The current extreme dry conditions, most likely not only in Tuk Tuk, but also in other parts of Sumatra, especially Riau, keep the controlled and un-controlled forest fires going. These fires are the main source for the Haze in Tuk Tuk, of course the people in Tuk Tuk do their level best to assist in building up the Haze by burning whatever waste and other stuff they can find.
I am afraid that to get rid of the Haze we will need a lot of rain, not only in Tuk Tuk but also in neighboring provinces.
To give you an idea what you can expect in Tuk Tuk these days I intend from now on to report here daily on how far we can see. You can compare the data with how far we can see from Tuk Tuk on a very clear sunny day with a blue sky. On such a day from Horas Family Home we see beyond the contours of Balige, which means a bit over a 100 km.
